Former President of the Baptist Union of Great Britain (2008-9), Revd Dr John Weaver was recently presented with a special book entitled, Prayers of the People, to mark his retirement as Principal of South Wales Baptist College. Edited by College tutors, Karen Smith and Simon Woodman, the book is a unique collection of prayers by nearly 100 people from within the Baptist family and is intended for use in public worship and private devotion.
Commenting on the special volume, Karen and Simon said that they realized that John’s ministry had reached far beyond the College, and wanted to offer others a way of expressing their thanks to God for John and his service to Christ among Baptists in Great Britain. Given John’s passion for preaching, his love for Scripture, and his firm belief that ministry is inclusive and should be shared by all regardless of age, gender, race or status, they decided to invite members of the Baptist family to contribute prayers which might be used in public worship. Many of the contributors were able to be present at the College Valedictory service on 16th June at Tabernacle Baptist Church Penarth and stood when John was surprised with the presentation of Prayers of the People. Revd Roy Jenkins, Chair of the College trustees, said “John has given outstanding service to the college. He’s led a highly respected academic team, and his own lecturing and prolific publication record reveal his passion for relating the Christian faith to the big issues of our day.”
Prayers of the People has been published jointly by the Centre for Baptist History and Heritage and South Wales Baptist College. It may be purchased online at www.rpc.ox.ac.uk, or by going direct to this link http://tinyurl.com/6j68yeb. The price is £10 plus £3.30 p&p.
