Cardiff College appoints new principal
The South Wales Baptist College, Cardiff has appointed the Rev Dr Peter K.Stevenson as its new principal, from September next year.
Dr Stevenson has been a tutor at Spurgeon’s College in London for the past 15 years and is currently director of continuing ministerial development. He will succeed the Rev Dr John Weaver, who will be retiring after ten years at the Cardiff college.
Peter Stevenson, who hails from Northern Ireland, was a minister in Bedford and Solihull before moving to Chatsworth, West Norwood where he served as joint pastor with his wife, the Rev Susan Stevenson (now pastor of Blackheath and Charlton Baptist Church).
He has close links with the Baptist churches of Ghana, where he has taught and preached regularly. He chairs the trustees of the Ghana Christian Support Group.
The Rev Roy Jenkins, chair of the Cardiff college trustees, said: ‘Peter Stevenson is outstandingly qualified to lead the college and its very strong and highly regarded teaching team. We were delighted to receive a glowing report from independent inspectors last year, and we look forward to building on the strengths which they identified.’
As one of the oldest academic institutions in Wales, the South Wales Baptist College has been training Christian ministers for more than 200 years. Its students have served across the UK, and in many other countries.
Established at Abergavenny in 1807, the college moved to Cardiff (via Pontypool) in 1893, when it became an independent college linked with the university in the city.
